1. SYA CARDINAL CUP
Opening
pre-season play in a combined U-15/U-16 Elite bracket, the U-15
Herndon Hotspur went undefeated on their way to winning the
2009 Cardinal Cup Soccer Tournament. The Hotspurs offense was just
about as hot as the August sun as the Hotspurs notched 20 goals
while allowing just one over the course of the tourney.
Play began
against the Loudoun 93G Red. The Hotspurs scored early in the match
and never looked back on their way to a 4-0 victory. In Saturday
afternoon's contest, against the FCSC Xplosion, the offensive
assault continued as the Spurs found the net eight times for their
second shutout of the day.
The scoring
continued on Sunday against the NVSC Jr. Majestics 93, as the
Hotspurs added six more goals to their tally for a 6-0 win, which
put them in the championship game against the B Flight's top team,
the Braddock Road Elite 94 (Eclipse).
Sunday
afternoon's conditions remained brutally hot, with parents and
spectators sweating just sitting in the shade of sideline tents
while watching the championship match.
The Hotspurs
fought through the heat and took a 1-0 lead into halftime against
the scrappy Braddock Road squad. The Spurs added another goal in the
second half before BRYC found the net off a corner kick late in the
match for the final 2-1 result, giving the Herndon Hotspur the title
of 2009 Cardinal Cup champion.
2. DULLES NATIONAL SOCCER
TOURNAMENT
Herndon Hotspur Go Unbeaten to Win
Dulles National Soccer Tournament
The Herndon
Hotspurs won their second pre-season tournament championship in as
many outings winning the Dulles National Soccer Tournament the
weekend of Aug. 29-30. What was as equally impressive was that the
U-15 Hotspur played up in the top bracket (Premier) of the U-18 age
group
On opening
day, the Hotspur came away with an opening 4-1 victory over the
Herndon 91 Flyers. The Hotspurs found the net first at the 20 minute
mark. However, after a Flyers goal six minutes later, the halftime
score was knotted 1-1. The second half started quickly with a
Hotspur shot within the first minute and they kept the offensive
firepower flowing, eventually taking the lead 2-1 at the 52 minute
mark off a free kick. Another goal followed three minutes later with
the final tally notched 62 minutes into the contest.
The second
game of the day saw the Hotspurs blank the CYA 91 Premier 3-0.
The Spurs took the lead just over nine minutes in, off a free kick,
and followed just over a minute later with another goal to take an
early 2-0 lead, which they held onto at halftime. At the 67 minute
mark the Spurs added their final tally of the game off a beautiful
cross. The midfield and back line played great defense throughout
the game as well allowing just a handful of shots all game providing
the first shutout win of the tournament.
The other team
in the top bracket, the Herndon Arsenal RFC 92, also ended play on
Saturday undefeated, which meant that the two top teams - scheduled
to play Sunday morning - would meet again Sunday afternoon unless
both teams agreed to let the morning game decide the championship.
Both coaches agreed prior to the start of the contest, so the
championship was decided at the 9 a.m. showdown.
By far the
best game of the three, the Hotspur and Arsenal battled to a
scoreless halftime tie, even though both teams had scoring
opportunities in the half. The Spurs finally found the back of the
net at the 58 minute mark and held off a tough Arsenal squad for the
victory.
The Herndon
Hotspur now prepare for a tough WAGS Division I fall season that
begins on Sept. 12 as they host the VSA Heat, the U-14 State Cup
champion.

3. WAGS Game
1- VSA Heat vs. Hotspur
Hotspur Open
Fall Campaign with Victory Over VSA Heat
On a cool
September morning (Sept. 12), the Herndon Hotspur opened the Fall
2009 WAGS soccer season with a hard fought 1-0 win over the
defending State Cup champion VSA Heat. It was the opening match of
the fall campaign for both squads.
Both teams had
good scoring opportunities in the half but both defenses (and goal
keepers) rose to the occasion and neither side could find the net
resulting in a scoreless first half.
At the 44:45
mark of the 2nd half the Heat found themselves with an open goal and
took the shot from 25 yards out. For sure the ball was floating into
the goal but at the last minute an Hotspur defender appeared and
headed the ball away. It was a very physical second half
but the Hotspur finally notched the sole goal of the match at the
65th minute on a breakaway.
With 1:30
remaining in the match a Heat player suffered an injury and had to
be carried off the field by stretcher. The Herndon Hotspur players
and parents wish her a speedy recovery and best wishes.
With a 1-0
regular season record, the Hotspur travel to the Maryland Soccerplex
on Sunday, Sept. 13 for a 1 p.m. away match against the Bethesda
Freedom 94/95.
4. WAGS game
2: Hotspur vs. Bethesda
Hotspur Fall
to Bethesda Freedom
In the second
game in as many days, the Herndon Hotspur traveled to face the
always tough Bethesda Freedom at the Maryland Soccer Complex
Sunday, Sept. 13.
Bethesda found
the net first scoring on a miscommunication by the Hotspur defense
at the 31st minute. The Hotspur, though, came on strong in the
remainder of the half and tallied the equalizer with just two
minutes remaining for a halftime score of 1-1.
The two squads
battled back and forth in the second half before Bethesda notched
the go-ahead with a diving header off a corner kick and the
ultimately winning goal at the 58 minute mark, holding on for a 2-1
win.
With a 1-1
regular season record, the Hotspur next travel to meet the Chantilly
Firecats on Sunday, Sept. 20 in a 1:30 p.m. WAGS match.

5. State Cup
Prelim round one:
Hotspur Open
State Cup with Shutout of VSA Swoosh The Herndon Hotspur started
State Cup competition on Saturday, Sept. 26, with a convincing 4-0
opening round victory over the VSA Swoosh. On a chilly, rainy
Saturday, Herndon controlled the match and outshot the Swoosh,
notching two goals in each half on their way to the shutout
victory.
The scoring
started 9:40 into the match off a corner kick with the second goal
coming 15:08 in the contest. Not resting on their 2-0 halftime
advantage, the Hotspur added second half goals at 54:53 and at 64:50
into the match. All told, four different players found the net for
Herndon on their way to the 4-0 victory.
Next up in
State Cup competition is a local team, the Chantilly Courage.
6. State Cup
Prelim round two:
Hotspur Win
Second Round Match Over Chantilly Courage. In the second round of
the State Cup competition on Saturday, Oct. 3, the Herndon Hotspur
advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-0 win over the Chantilly

4:43 mark of the first half after a Herndon forward was taken down
in the box.
Two more goals
in the first half, one off a corner kick at the 28:45 mark and the
second on a great open field shot at the 33:56 mark which gave the
Hotspur a 3-0 halftime advantage.
Two more
second half goals finished the scoring. Herndon tallied their fourth
goal of the match just under 23 minutes into the final period. Nine
minutes later they notched their final goal off a corner kick, one

hot as the weather was cold, besting the CYA Firecats 4-1.

one besting of the Firecat goalie. The Firecats, however, responded
at the 6:26 mark to equalize the game, but Herndon would go on to
add two more goals in the first half ? at the 20 and 26 minute marks
